"Toward effective communication of agrometeorological services"

Abstract

Agrometeorological services are a subset of climate services targeted to support farmers' tactical and strategic decisions, with the potential to support farmers' capacity to cope with climate variability and change, as well as strengthen their resilience toward climatic risks. However, the effectiveness of such services is often limited by inadequate and unsuitable means of communication with farmers. Therefore, in recent years, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its partners have focused their efforts on improving communication through these services. At the European Meteorological Society (EMS) Annual Meeting in September 2022, a workshop on effective communication of agrometeorological services was held as a hybrid side event, with the aim of answering the question: “How can we deliver efficient and effective agrometeorological services”? The workshop was a joint endeavor of Met Éireann, the International Society of Biometeorology, the EMS Media and Communication Committee, the Slovenian Environment Agency, the Slovenian Meteorological Society, and the S. W. Tromp Foundation. The aim of this workshop was to advance better communication of services to the agriculture sector as a basis for promoting adaptive strategies for weather and climate change, which would enable sufficient food production at present and in the future. The workshop also provided an opportunity for transdisciplinary discussions between national meteorological and hydrological services, universities, research institutes, private companies, and the WMO. The topics discussed at the workshop included learning about exemplar agrometeorological services at various national hydrometeorological services, strengthening communication of agrometeorological services to end-users, improving data and information sharing, and educating end-users. The workshop resulted in a list of recommendations for the future.

"Merjenje padavin z radarjem"

Presek, Vol. 19, No. 5, 316–319. DMF, 1992.

Poobjava s prijaznim dovoljenjem DMFA – Društva matematikov, fizikov in astronomov Slovenije – in DMFA-založništva.

"Radar measurement of precipitation in non-optimal conditions"

International Seminar on Advanced Weather Radar

Systems, Collier, C. G. (Ed.), 150–158. COST 75 Project, European

Communities, 1999. Reproduction kindly permitted by European

Communities.

Differences between the radar-estimated rainfall aloft and the

corresponding raingauge-measured rainfall at the ground can be

corrected by various techniques. In this article, three typical

representatives of the following three main correction classes are

statistically evaluated and inter-compared, using a common radar /

raingauge data set: assessment factors, regression functions, and

vertical extrapolations.

"Radarsko merjenje padavin v neoptimalnih razmerah"

Magistrsko delo. Univerza v Ljubljani, FMF, Ljubljana, 1996.

Poobjava s prijaznim dovoljenjem FMF – Fakultete za matematiko in

fiziko na Univerzi Ljubljana.

Magistrsko delo najprej predstavi teorijo radarskega merjenja padavin. Sledijo opis sočasnega merjenja padavin z vremenskim radarjem in s talno mrežo 80 ombrometrov, analiza preko 6000 ur izmerkov ter določitev radarskih napak.

"Kalibracija vremenskega radarja s kroglo"

Tehnično poročilo. ARSO, Ljubljana, 2007.

Poobjava s prijaznim dovoljenjem ARSO – Agencije RS za okolje.

S C-pasovnim vremenskim radarjem na Lisci smo izmerili ekvivalentno

radarsko odbojnost kovinske krogle s premerom 30 cm pri oddaljenosti

13 km.

balonom.

Pol stoletja slovenskega meteorološkega društva,

Hočevar, A. (urednik), 80–85. DMS, Ljubljana, 2004.

Poobjava SMD – Slovenskega meteorološkega društva.

Članek prikazuje zgodovino radarskega zaznavanja in merjenja

padavin v Sloveniji od leta 1971 do 2004.

"Convection development in a sheared wind field"

Technical Report. Slovenian Hydrometeorological Institute, Slovenia,

Ljubljana, 1988.

Redistribution kindly permitted by ARSO – Slovenian Environmental

Agency.

Effects of the ambient wind profile on the atmospheric convection

development are studied using a three-dimensional numerical model.

Temperature and humidity fields used, and microphysical processes

included are directed specifically toward the studying of

mid-latitude summertime continental thunderstorms. Convection is

triggered by the initial temperature and momentum perturbation in a

form of a shallow radial symmetric warm updraft.

A three-dimensional numerical simulation of a convective-cloud ensemble was performed in order to study the formation process of long-lasting precipitating convective cells. As the initial condition, random small thermals were given in the horizontally homogeneous atmosphere.

ozemlje velikosti okrog 100 × 100 km.

"Toča in obramba pred njo"

ARSO, Ljubljana, 2005.

Takoj

se ulije močan dež in le tu in tam pade kako drobno zrno toče.

Mladci so bili uspešni! Preprečili so katastrofo! Ali res?

Introduction to Meteorology

This is an English version of the textbook in Slovenian »Uvod v meteorologijo« first published in 2020. The English version is chiefly intended for international students who are attending the introductory meteorology courses at the University of Ljubljana but do not understand the Slovenian language. It is also aimed for English-speaking readers from the general public who are curious about our atmosphere and the weather and may find the content interesting or useful. Its content enables a basic understanding of the most important processes in the atmosphere and how weather forecasts are prepared. The textbook also contains many practically-themed problem-solving exercises with solutions provided, making the theoretical concepts more understandable and practically useful.
